Dialogues between Science and Education: UNESCO Chair of Science for Education

The meeting promoted the dialog about the theme “Education and the Cost of Poverty”

On June 29th, we held another webinar of the UNESCO Chair on Science for Education, the result of a partnership between the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, the D’Or Institute for Research and Education (IDOR), and the National Science for Education Network (Rede CpE).

The meeting took place at IDOR’s headquarters in Rio de Janeiro and was also broadcast online. This time, we had the presence of Sebastian Lipina, from the National University of Buenos Aires/Argentina, and Daniel Domingues dos Santos, from the University of São Paulo in Ribeirão Preto/Brazil.

Dr. Lipina talked about how children’s socioeconomic status during learning is associated with different patterns of activation of neural networks in tasks requiring speech, cognitive control, and arithmetic. In addition, she highlighted that understanding individual factors and interpersonal relationships is essential to establish measures that contribute to learning.

In turn, Dr. Daniel reported on the importance of ensuring investments in education, offering adequate infrastructure and equipment to trained and updated professionals, to promote the development of a more attractive student curriculum, which favors the development of socio-emotional and cognitive skills by children.
