Event held in Texas brings together experts to discuss ethics, technology, and regulations in mental health data sharing
Did you know that IDOR is part of an international collaboration for the responsible and ethical sharing of data in the fields of neuroscience and mental health across four continents? The BRIDGE project, supported by the Wellcome Trust, recently held a Global Workshop hosted in Texas, USA.
The event brought together international experts to address ethical, technological, and regulatory challenges in neuroscience and health data governance, focusing on cultural considerations and the protection of sensitive data across different regions of the world. Key technological barriers to data generation, sharing, and effective reuse between regions were also discussed, particularly infrastructure deficiencies in areas such as Africa and South America, as well as concerns over data security and privacy.
During the workshop, IDOR emphasized the importance of aligning data collection and sharing in neuroimaging with ethical guidelines, especially in contexts involving vulnerable communities such as Indigenous peoples in Latin America. Furthermore, it reinforced the need for a minimum common legislative framework among Latin American countries to foster greater scientific collaboration and ensure the proper protection of data.
The workshop also provided an opportunity for IDOR to raise awareness about the concept of Persons With Lived Experience (PWLE), underscoring the importance of their inclusion in decision-making processes for neuroimaging research. Additionally, it highlighted IDOR’s role as a leader in developing global solutions for the challenges of data governance.
